MORE ON FOURTH AND GOAL
Fourth and Goal has an a three-part initiative: 1) to secure funds for retired players in immediate need, 2) to reform, improve and update the pension plan system currently in place and 3) to garner representation for retired players by the NFL Player's Association to insure the retired players will get the care they need.

A community of NFL players, Fourth and Goal works diligently to raise public awareness surrounding these issues by conducting informational media interviews and working in cooperation with other like-minded organizations to improve the lives of retired players who worked to make the league what it is today.

The organization's charge included the formation of the 88 Plan (named after ex-Colt, John Mackey). The 88 Plan benefits retired players who, like Mackey, suffer from dementia or Alzheimer's.

Through its fund-raising efforts to date, Fourth and Goal has come to the aid of Larry Morris (formerly of the Chicago Bears and MVP of the 1963 NFL championship game) who now suffers from dementia · Wayne Hawkins (Oakland Raiders) who suffers from early-onset Alzheimer's and vascular dementia • Brent Boyd, who, after a 6-year career with the Minnesota Vikings, suffers from severe football-related illnesses • Suzie Heywood, whose late husband Ralph Heywood (the only NFL player to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces in three wars--World War II, Korea and Vietnam) passed away due to complications from Alzheimer's in April 2007. (Mrs. Heywood sold the couple's ranch and possessions and moved into a horse trailer in order to afford the care her husband needed.) • Syndi Shy, widow of Don Shy. Don was the first-round draft choice of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1967. During his seven-year NFL career, he played for the Steelers, the Chicago Bears, the St. Louis Cardinals and the New Orleans Saints. Don died from brain tumors in October 2006 at the of age 61.

Maxie Baughan, Joe DeLamielleure, John Hannah, Sam Havrilak, Sam Huff, Bruce Laird, Mercury Morris, Jim Mutscheller, Jeff Nixon and Charlie Waters serve on Fourth and Goal's Board of Directors.

"Crazy Days" For Adam Gregory All Summer Long

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

"Crazy Days" For Adam Gregory All Summer Long
Single Continues Charge up Charts

(Nashville, TN -- June 26, 2008) NSA/Midas recording artist Adam Gregory has led a hectic schedule this year with no rest in sight, balancing radio tours, personal appearances, media opportunities and songwriting sessions.

In between recent visits to Kansas City and Virginia Beach, Adam found some time to team up with fellow songwriter and Curb recording artist Lee Brice (pictured below). Lee was one of the collaborators on Adam's hit single "Crazy Days," along with Kyle Jacobs and Joe Leathers.

"We've got a great connection going on right now when we sit down to write," says Adam. "Even though we've completed all the tracks for the new album, you never know when an idea will spark a special song. We don't want to miss an opportunity like that."

"Crazy Days" continues its steady push up the charts, currently at #40 on Country Aircheck and #43 on the R&R charts. It moved six more spots last week up to #28 on the Music Row charts. The video is currently receiving impressive play on a broad cross-section of national and regional outlets across the country.

Adam was a hot item at this year's CMA Music Festival as well, trying his hand as a fashion model, celebrity baseball player, jam host/headliner and of course, country music performer. He signed autographs for hours and thrilled thousands of insatiable concertgoers with his performances on the Greased Lightning Daytime Stages at the first two days of the festival.

His current coast-to-coast radio tour has seen Adam visit over 100 stations in 37 states since March. Adam will continue burning up the road this summer, visiting radio stations and making appearances across the country into August. His debut U.S. album is set for a fall release.

Pictured L to R: Lee Brice and Adam Gregory found some time recently for another songwriting session. The duo collaborated on Gregory's current hit single, "Crazy Days."

GEORGE JONES: BURN YOUR PLAYHOUSE DOWN: the unreleased duets; Released August 19

,
BANDIT RECORDS TO RELEASE
GEORGE JONES: BURN YOUR PLAYHOUSE DOWN: the unreleased duets

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - June 23,2008...Bandit Records will release GEORGE JONES - BURN YOUR PLAYHOUSE DOWN: the unreleased duets, a collection of never before heard duets between Jones and his illustrious guests on August 19, 2008. The recordings range from the mid-70s with his ex-wife, the "First Lady of Country Music," Tammy Wynette to the most recent recording from 2007 with his daughter, Georgette, the only child from the union of George and Tammy.

Seven of the recordings are extra songs, not included in The Bradley Barn Sessions that MCA Records released in 1994. Produced by Brian Ahern, the Bradley Barn recordings brought together superstar musicians and singers from both the country and rock world. Recorded during the worst ice storm in Tennessee history, the 1993 sessions, which took place over the course of several weeks, brought together VINCE GILL, RICKY SKAGGS, LEON RUSSELL and MARTY STUART - as the core of the studio band with KEITH RICHARDS, MARK KNOPFLER, EMMYLOU HARRIS trading off as instrumentalists and vocalists on many of the songs. The top players in Nashville - Eddie Bayers, Mac McAnally, Jerry Douglas, Glenn Worf, Brent Rowan, Glen D. Hardin, John Jennings, Harry Stinson, Richard Bennett and many more made the icy trek every day to Mt. Juliet, about 30 miles outside of Nashville. No one wanted to miss these historic sessions which paired Jones with an array of superstars influenced by the artist they considered the greatest living country singer. Ahern produced the classic Jones hits as an acoustic project to give the songs a different feel than the originals. The "extra" songs which are now part of BURN YOUR PLAYHOUSE DOWN are:

BURN YOUR PLAYHOUSE DOWN with KEITH RICHARDS

WINDOW UP ABOVE with LEON RUSSELL

SELFISHNESS IN MAN with VINCE GILL

SHE ONCE LIVED HERE with RICKY SKAGGS

I ALWAYS GET LUCKY WITH YOU with MARK KNOPFLER

YOU'RE STILL ON MY MIND with MARTY STUART

WHEN THE GRASS GROWS OVER ME with MARK CHESNUTT

Three duets included in BURN YOUR PLAYHOUSE DOWN are songs not used from the Friends In High Places album sessions that Epic Records released in 1991. Produced by Billy Sherrill, the album contained duets recorded in 1988 and 1991. That album suffered from lack of attention as it was Jones' final album for Epic Records, and the duets were later added to the re-release of Jones' 1979 My Very Special Guests. The three duets contained on BURN YOUR PLAYHOUSE DOWN that were never released on any project are:

I ALWAYS GET IT RIGHT WITH YOU with SHELBY LYNNE

TAVERN CHOIR with JIM LAUDERDALE

ROCKIN' YEARS with DOLLY PARTON

Dolly recorded "Rockin' Years" later in 1991 with Ricky Van Shelton and they had a #1 hit with it.

The final two duets are a "family affair." With cooperation from Sony/BMG, the Epic vaults were combed and an unreleased duet was found between Jones and Wynette. "Lovin' You, Lovin' Me" was recorded in November 1977.

The "focus" track from BURN YOUR PLAYHOUSE DOWN is the most recent recording. YOU AND ME AND TIME pairs Jones with his daughter, Georgette Jones. Georgette co-wrote the song that chronicles the alienation she often experienced from her famous Dad. The "happy ending" reveals that time can heal the hurt that a child of divorce often experiences. YOU AND ME AND TIME was produced by Keith Stegall in 2007.

CMA Music Fest Wrap-Up
Nashville was H-O-T during CMA Music Festival week, and Faith did her part to add to the heat with her performance at LP Field Friday night! Check out some of the behind-the-scenes photos HERE!

Christmas came early during CMA Fest for some lucky FaithFullAccess members Friday afternoon when they attended the exclusive "Joy to the World" listening party. Fans got the first listen of Faith's upcoming Christmas album, due out in September. Here's what a few of them had to say about the album:

hugefaithfan:
"The CD was AWESOME. Faith if you read this, all I can say is Bravo! It is a masterpiece. I encourage everyone to pick up a copy when it comes out. Faith used a big band with lots of horns etc. and her voice was polished and bigger than life. I was truly blown away and in talking with the other fans that attended, this CD is beyond compare. It reminded me of some of the Christmas music I grew up on. The CD contains 13 songs including a new single, "A baby changes everything". WOW!!! I know I will be buying a copy as soon as it is released. I think Faith said it will be released in September."

faith_mcgraw_tim96:
"I absolutely loved the Christmas cd. I can't wait for it to come out. Faith sang her butt off on this one. I still can't believe that Faith showed up..... She did mention that she is going to release a single from this album. It is a song called A Baby Changes Everything. Absolutely beautiful, gave me chills when I heard it."

Thanks to everyone who came out to the festivities!

NASHVILLE, TENN. (June 19, 2008)--Ten songwriters and five songwriter/artists have been nominated for one of the nation’s highest songwriting honors – induction into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Of the nominees, two from the songwriter category and one from the songwriter/artist category will be inducted during the annual Hall of Fame Dinner and Induction Ceremony to be held on Sunday, October 26, at the Renaissance Nashville Hotel.

“Each of these nominees has honed the songwriting craft to perfection, and the songs they’ve given us are absolute treasures,” said Roger Murrah, a 2005 inductee and the current chair of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Foundation (NaSHOF), which owns and administers the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

The ballot seeks to recognize songwriters whose first significant works achieved commercial success and/or artistic recognition at least 20 years ago and have “positively impacted and been closely associated with the Nashville music community and deemed to be outstanding and significant.”

This year’s ten nominees in the Songwriter category are: Matraca Berg (“Strawberry Wine” by Deana Carter), Paul Craft (“Hank Williams, You Wrote My Life” by Moe Bandy), Kye Fleming (“I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool” by Barbara Mandrell), Larry Henley (“The Wind Beneath My Wings” by Bette Midler), the late John Jarrard (“Blue Clear Sky” by George Strait), Bob Morrison (“You Decorated My Life” by Kenny Rogers), Mark D. Biographical information on the nominees, and an online version of this release, is available at: http://www.nashvillesongwritersfoundation.com/73TEMP/news13B.html.

The ballot was recommended to the NaSHOF board of directors by the Hall of Fame Nominating Committee, which is comprised of Hall of Fame members and Music Row historians. Votes are cast by Hall of Fame members and Professional Songwriter members of the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI), as well as the boards of the NaSHOF and NSAI.

Established in 1970, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame boasts 168 members, including songwriting luminaries such as Johnny Cash, Rodney Crowell, Bob Dylan, Don & Phil Everly, Flatt & Scruggs, Vince Gill, Harlan Howard, Roger Miller, Bill Monroe, Roy Orbison, Dolly Parton, Carl Perkins, Dottie Rambo, Jimmie Rodgers, Cindy Walker, Jimmy Webb, Hank Williams, Sr. and Hank Williams, Jr. It was announced in September 2007 that the future home of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame will be the historic building at 34 Music Square East, former home of the Quonset Hut, Columbia Studio A, Columbia and Epic Records and Sony Music Nashville. The Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame will become the first organization honoring songwriters to emerge from a virtual entity to one with a physical location.

The Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit foundation dedicated to honoring and preserving the songwriting legacy of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. The NaSHOF’s principal purposes are to educate, archive and celebrate songwriting that is uniquely associated with the Nashville music community.

Shawna Russell Graces the Front Page of the Nashville Business Journal

For Immediate Release:

Shawna Russell and Way Out West Records Featured in Nashville Business Journal Story – on Newsstands Now

Oklahoma Singer-Songwriter is Picked from Hundreds of Hopeful New Artists at CMA Music Fest for In-Depth Focus by Prestigious Business Publication

NASHVILLE, TN (June 17, 2008) – Oklahoma singer-songwriter Shawna Russell is pictured on the front page and interviewed in this week's Nashville Business Journal - on newsstands now.

Russell and her Way Out West Records label and management team were singled out of dozens of hopeful new artists and independent labels who attended this year's CMA Music Festival to be the featured focus of a story entitled "Independent musicians use CMA for launching pad."

Journalist Jenny Burns caught up with Russell and her team of uncle/producer/co-manager and Way Out West Records President, Tim Russell, and co-manager/publicist/record label V.P., Clif Doyal, in an interview held prior to Russell's performance at the Hard Rock CafƩ Outdoor Stage during CMA Music Fest 2008.

The story goes in-depth to look at Russell's career to date, and the impact the CMA Music Fest has on new artists. Russell's new single "Goddess" is examined, from the costs to produce and promote it, to the extensive radio touring that she undertaken in the past two months to pursue airplay for the song at Country radio.

It also tells of Russell's determination to pursue music stardom the hard way - and at the same time, finding more artistic freedom - on a small independent label, after being courted my at least five major labels who wanted to change her sound and style. Russell is quoted in the story saying, "When you put creativity and the person together, that's when you get the most magic in music."

Nashville publicist, Martha Moore of So Much Moore Media, Claire Ratliff-Sears of Laughing Penguin Publicity, and their respective clients, Zane Lewis and Pete Best were also highlighted in the feature.

Performing onstage since age 13, this was Russell's first year to attend the CMA Music Festival as an artist in her own right (she sang back-up as part of Ty England's band at the 2006 festival). In addition to her performance, she was interviewed by national and European media during the event.

FAITH HILL BRINGS JOY TO THE WORLD ON SEPTEMBER 16th WITH LONG ANTICIPATED CHRISTMAS RELEASE

FAITH HILL BRINGS JOY TO THE WORLD ON SEPTEMBER 16TH WITH

LONG ANTICIPATED CHRISTMAS RELEASE

NASHVILLE
– June 16, 2008 - The much rumored, highly anticipated Christmas album from 5-time Grammy Award winner Faith Hill will bring Joy To The World on Tuesday, September 16th. The 11-song CD, which already has the industry buzzing, combines some of the season’s most recognizable and beloved classics, with one of America’s most respected vocalists.

The recording, which was two years in the making, features The Nashville Orchestra as well as the London-based choirs Metro Voices and The London Oratory School Boys Choir. Grammy Award winner David Campbell (Paul McCartney, Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash, Beyonce) provides a newly composed full orchestration for “Joy,” which gives such classics as “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town,” “Little Drummer Boy,” “Winter Wonderland” and “Holly Jolly Christmas” a fresh, unique, and at times big band groove.

"I had a very clear vision for the type of Christmas album that I wanted to make,” said Faith. “Indicative of the big band orchestras of the 40s and 50s, with a full compliment of horns, stings, woodwinds, percussion and chorales. David's orchestrations were a gift. They embodied everything that I could have imaged; unique and beautiful, and yet they seem as though they were always intended for these songs."

Joy To The World will also feature the original single “A Baby Changes Everything,” written by Nashville songwriters Tim Nichols, Craig Wiseman and K.K. Wiseman. It features Faith at her finest, delivering a powerful and emotional vocal with her usual passion and precision.

“Joy To The World” is co-produced by Dan Huff, Byron Gallimore and Faith. It was engineered by Allen Sides.

THE GRASCALS TO PERFORM ON CBS EARLY SHOW ON JULY

THE GRASCALS TO PERFORM ON CBS EARLY SHOW ON JULY 5th
New Album, 'Keep On Walkin,' In Stores July 15 on Rounder Records

Burlington, MA – The Grascals, one of the most critically-acclaimed and dynamic groups in bluegrass music today, and the reigning IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) Entertainers of the Year for the last two years, will release their third studio album for Rounder Records, Keep On Walkin’, on July 15. The 12-song, self-produced album is the group’s first release in two years. It crystallizes the sound introduced and developed on the band’s first two Grammy®-nominated releases—traditional bluegrass and country music, both original and classic songs, all delivered with vocal and instrumental intensity and virtuosity. Timely and timeless, The Grascals’ music is entirely relevant to the here and now, yet based on a deeply-seeded knowledge of and admiration for the music’s founding fathers.

“After five years of singing together, and especially the last three years of extensive touring, we think we’ve really been able to define our sound on this record,” said Grascals vocalist and guitarist Jamie Johnson. “The whole process of doing this album, from finding songs, to arranging them, recording and mixing—was relaxed and fun. We took our time so we could do things the way we wanted and treat each song with the care it deserved.”

The album kicks into high gear with the lead track, “Feeling Blue,” written by well-known bluegrass tunesmith Aubrey Holt, who first met Jamie Johnson when they were in the Boys From Indiana. Holt has become one of the band’s favorite writers, contributing three songs to this album. In addition to “Feeling Blue,” which is an original song with the feel of an old Jimmy Martin tune, Holt wrote “Sad Wind Sighs.” A classic lament disguised in an uptempo tune, the song features the incomparable voice of special guest Vince Gill. Holt also explores the lighter side of life in “Happy Go Lucky,” the song that The Grascals performed to open the 2007 IBMA Awards and have included in their live shows ever since.

Jamie Johnson also displays his songwriting skills on two songs—the moving title track about life’s journeys, which he co-wrote with veteran songwriter Charley Stefl; and “Indiana,” which he co-wrote with another of the band’s favorite writers, Harley Allen. The song perfectly captures the bittersweet yearning for the home of one’s youth. Allen, who has written songs on all three of The Grascals’ albums, including the 2005 IBMA song of the Year, “Me and John and Paul,” continues to strike an emotional chord with “Remembering,” about the lingering effects of war.

Sprinkled throughout the album and shining like the gems they are, some country and bluegrass classics each get a refreshing and respectful turn from The Grascals. First, they put a new twist on Waylon Jennings’ “Only Daddy That’ll Walk the Line,” before Terry Eldredge sings a heart-rending lead on “Choices,” a hit for his musical hero, George Jones. Also included are some of the songs that the band regularly performs during their live shows—“Today I Started Loving You Again,” “Can’t You Hear That Whistle Blow” (featuring lead vocals and slap-bass playing by Terry Smith) and “Rollin’ in My Sweet Baby’s Arms.” As with their previous albums, the band took this one to play for Earl Scruggs, and they were delighted to see the smile on his face as “Rollin’” began. Following their tradition, The Grascals include a gospel number on this album, selecting “Farther Along” as the final track. It features Danny Roberts’ vocal debut singing bass as part of the four-part harmony.

Charlie Allen to Release Highly Anticipated CD - That Was Then, This Is Now

For Immediate Release:

Charlie Allen to Release Highly Anticipated CD, That Was Then, This Is Now, on June 17

On the Heels of Recent High-Profile Concert Appearances at CMA Music Fest and Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival - Veteran Performer Delivers Scorching New CD

NASHVILLE, TN (June 16, 2008) -- Charlie Allen is set to release his highly-anticipated River Run Records CD, That Was Then, This Is Now, on June 17.

That Was Then, This Is Now contains 12 songs, 10 of which were co-written by Allen. The CD is being released on the heels of several successful radio singles by Allen, including "I Did This To Me," "Can't Take Him Out Of Me" and his latest, "See If I Care."

In advance of the release, Allen has recently upped his media and fan exposure considerably by performing at two of the music industry's most high-profile festivals in the past two weeks, including his well-received debut at the CMA Music Fest in Nashville, and his blistering set this past weekend at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, Tn.

Allen is a true artist in the classic blue collar Country mold. Soulful, gritty, real, and not always politically correct, his songs are definitely not for the faint-of-heart. They are real "slice-of-life" tunes that deal with love, loss, hurt, abuse and addiction - the kind of songs that the Country format was built on.

Allen hails from Bristol, the east Tennessee town credited with being the birthplace of modern Country music. (It was there that Ralph Peer first recorded The Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers and others, creating what is now referred to as "The Big Bang" of Country).

Allen has been performing since childhood. At age 7, he was singing onstage at Panther Hall in Ft. Worth, TX., and appearing in concert with iconic country artists such as Hank Williams, Jr., Waylon Jennings, Loretta Lynn and Jerry Lee Lewis, among others. From those auspicious beginnings, Allen has built a career full of highlights, including a stint with Parc Records and Parc Studios, who boasted clients such as The Backstreet Boys, 'N Snyc, Britney Spears, and Mariah Carey.

Highlights of That Was Then, This Is Now include "Can't Take Him Out Of Me," wherein Allen puts his feelings about his maker front and center – and warns of the consequences of taking God out of everyday life; "I Did This To Me" finds the man taking responsibility for a relationship that he has allowed to fall victim to his own cheating and excessive drinking; "Why Ask Why" (which is a featured download in Country Weekly's "Listen Up!" section in their current edition) is a fun romp of young carefree love; "See If I Care" is a classic and sultry ballad which demonstrates the depth and power of both Allen's vocals and writing skills, and "Everything But Me," a love-gone-bad tale – where only the material items of their life together were taken when the woman left.

Allen serves up the classic Danny O'Keefe song, "Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues" with all of the darkness of the original – while slowing the tempo a bit and making it his own. "Proof" is about how the effects of alcohol can reveal truths that one might not disclose in a sober moment. "Can't Live Without You" reveals Allen's sentimental side – and leaves the listener little doubt as to his right to be one of today's top country stars. The title track, "That Was Then, This Is Now," tells the story of a woman who has lost her love - and sank to the depths of despair - only to find the confidence - and the will - to live and love again.

That Was Then, This Is Now is being distributed nationally by Select-O-Hits, and is also available at Amazon, i-Tunes and the artist's websites: http://www.charlieallenmusic.com or http://www.MySpace.com/charlieallenmusic.com.

GEORGE JONES TO REUNITE WITH OLD FRIEND FROM THE PAST

GEORGE JONES TO REUNITE WITH OLD
FRIEND FROM THE PAST

George Jones' Stolen Guitar to Be Returned After 46 Years

(Nashville, TN) – On Saturday June 14th, George Jones and his 1957 Martin 000-18 acoustic guitar will reunite after 46 years of separation.

In 1962, Jones and the guitar parted ways… but not on mutual terms. The guitar was stolen, by two boys looking to sell it for "beer money," from Jones while he performed a series of shows at Panther Hall in Ft. Worth, Texas. A short time after stealing the guitar from Jones, the two youngsters sold it to a man by the name of Larry Berry. The guitar, equipped with a strap that includes Jones’ name bordered with streaks of “White Lightning,” was sold to Berry for ten dollars. Now, almost 50 years later, the guitar will be returned to its rightful owner.

Larry Berry recently contacted Tom Perryman of 104.1 “The Ranch” (KKUS-FM) in Tyler, Texas, in attempt to reach Jones regarding the stolen guitar. The attempt to contact Jones was successful.

“When I got that call from Tom, I thought it was just a radio station playing a joke like they always do, but as it turned out, it was the real deal,” says Jones. “I just can’t wait to get it back and start pickin’!”

Berry will return the guitar to George Jones during his concert at Diamond Jacks Casino in Bossier City, Louisiana on June 14th… but only under one condition… in exchange for the guitar, Berry wants his ten dollars back.

NEWS: James McMurtry sweeps nominations for Americana Honors & Awards

http://www.lightningrodrecords.com/

JAMES McMURTRY IS NOMINATED FOR "BEST ARTIST," "BEST ALBUM" AND "BEST SONG" IN 2008 AMERICANA MUSIC HONORS & AWARDS

McMurtry's breakthrough album, Just Us Kids, spent six weeks at #1 in Radio & Records and appeared on four charts in Billboard.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- In tonight's announcement of nominees for the 2008 Americana Honors & Awards, James McMurtry was nominated in three categories: "Best Artist," "Best Album" and "Best Song." The album is his current CD, Just Us Kids on Lightning Rod Records, and the song is the controversial "Cheney's Toy." McMurtry was tied for most nominations.

Since the April 15 release of Just Us Kids, great things have happened for McMurtry, making this his breakthrough recording in many ways. The album spent six straight weeks at #1 on Radio & Records' Americana Airplay chart, and has held steady at #2 for several weeks since then. In its first week, the album debuted on no fewer than four Billboard sales charts (Hot 200 albums, Heatseekers, New Artist and Indie), outpacing his last release, Childish Things, in sales.

The nominations, announced today by the Americana Music Association, are not a first for McMurtry, who in 2006 was nominated and won awards for both "Best Album" and "Best Song." McMurtry has received the highest press accolades for Just Us Kids, applauding his bravery for speaking about the problems facing America, and even calling the enemy by name. "You'd be hard-pressed to find a more hard-boiled depiction of hardscrabble '00s life on the edge of recession," wrote Blender in its four-star review. Entertainment Weekly deemed it an "EW pick," citing "brilliant character sketches and a steamy Texas roadhouse rumble." And Rolling Stone minced no words: "The veteran Texas songwriter's new album, Just Us Kids, features the slow burner 'Cheney's Toy,' one of the sharpest musical indictments yet of George Bush."

The Washington Post took it even further: "There's a good chance that McMurtry's Just Us Kids will be the best album of 2008. Angry and scathing in this year of war, recession and presidential campaigns, the disc transcends mere sloganeering by offering the kind of complicated characters and visual description you might expect from the son of novelist Larry McMurtry. But this is much more than literature set to folkie guitar; these tangled tales of dead-end teenagers, burned-out boomers, cynical politicians, divorced loners, drunken roadies and homeless survivors are pushed along by a twitchy John Lee Hooker-like boogie that keeps you hungry for the next line."

McMurtry has been on a non-stop North American tour since the release of Just Us Kids, and will continue with these summer dates:

Thur June 12 MEMPHIS, TN Automatic Slim's
Fri June 13 FAYETTEVILLE, AR George's Majestic Lounge

Songwriting Legend Hank Cochran "Eases Into" Cyberspace -- Launches MySpace Page/ Exclusive BBC Radio Interview Online Now

Songwriting Legend Hank Cochran “Eases Into” Cyberspace -- Launches MySpace Page

Exclusive BBC Radio Interview Available Online Now

Nashville, TN (June 11, 2008) – Songwriting legend Hank Cochran has “eased into” cyberspace, launching a MySpace page (http://www.myspace.com/songwritersingerhankcochran) that is filled with one-of-a-kind photos, handwritten song lyrics and tales from six decades in the music industry.

While Hank might be an internet neophyte, he’s long been a staple of the Google® generation. A recent online search showed nearly 150,000 references to Cochran, and one of those is a link to a recent interview with host Marie Crichton (www.bbc.co.uk/radioshropshire) that premiered earlier this week on the BBC. The program, which features exclusive “story behind the song” discussion, is accessible all this week at the station’s “Listen Again” section. Fans can learn how Cochran classics like “Make The World Go Away” and “I Fall To Pieces” came to be written and recorded, and hear Hank’s thoughts on new recordings by Lee Ann Womack (“He’ll Be Back”) and Cat Power (“She’s Got You”).

“A great, new cut is always gratifying,” says the living legend. “But, it’s always nice to reminisce about the older ones, too. I just hope everyone who tunes in to the show hears something that they find interesting.”

Zane Lewis' Smashin' Guitars A Big Hit With CMA Music Festival Fans

Zane Lewis’ Smashin’ Guitars A Big Hit With CMA Music Festival Fans

Nashville, TN (June 11, 2008) – Zane Lewis’ “smashin’ guitars” are fast-becoming the rowdy Texan’s trademark. During the CMA Music Festival, Zane and rhythm guitarist Trip were caught bashing six-strings during a blistering-hot take on Zane’s “theme” song, “Bad Ass Country Band.” “The crowd really seemed to get into it,” says the lanky Z-man, who played a wicked six-song set in the 100-plus degree heat. “I just don’t think they expected to see how into it we were!”

Eight-year old Jacob Kinman of Bedford, Kentucky thought the “smash” was “awesome.” He was lucky enough to catch a piece of one guitar – and Zane’s autograph.

Festival-goers flocked to the Digital Rodeo, Outdoor Channel and Vault booths to enter and win one of two electric guitars offered as prizes in Zane’s Guitars ‘N Swag contest. Lewis was quick to remind them that fans can also sign up to win at www.MySpace.com/zanelewis.

Zane was in Nashville promoting his new CD, ZANE LEWIS (Slant Records) and his new single, “Welcome To The Southland.” Catch up with Zane online at www.zanelewismusic.com. For interviews, email somuchmoore@charter.net or call Martha at 615-746-3994.

Jeff Griffith's First Music Fest Full of Fun & Surprises- Parade, Ernest Tubb's, Stampley's B-DAY on Riverfront Stage

Jeff Griffith’s First Music Fest Full Of Surprises – And Fun

Singer Misses Parade Ride, Sings At Ernest Tubb’s, Celebrates Joe Stampley’s 65th Birthday On Riverfront Stage

Nashville, TN (June 10, 2008) When Texas recording artist Jeff Griffith arrived in Nashville for his first CMA Music Festival, he never imagined how jam-packed the week would be – or how much fun he would have. “It was amazing,” Griffith says. “I loved every minute of it – from the booths to performing - it was incredible.”

Griffith certainly made the most out of his Music Festival debut, but admits to a moment of near-panic when he realized he’d missed his ride in the opening-day festivities parade. “I was there,” says the sociable Texan. “But I guess I was talkin’ to someone and didn’t hear ‘em call my name. The driver just fell in line – without me!”

In the Mr. Coffee booth Jeff met a like-minded fan in six-year old Austin DeClue of Bonne Terre, Missouri. The two handsome, cowboy-hat wearin’ gents shared a light-hearted moment.

Jeff drew a large crowd to the Ernest Tubb Record Shop for a live interview with and acoustic performance for WSM Radio’s Keith Bilbrey. Jeff sang his current hit, “Holed Up In Some Honky Tonk,” and shared a brand new composition, “That’s Why I Had To Say Goodbye,” with fans.

On the Riverfront Stage, Jeff, along with compadre Joe Stampley, held sway over the crowd – and celebrated Joe’s 65th birthday with the Moe & Joe classic, “Good Ol’ Boys,” and the title track from Griffith’s debut CD, IF IT AIN’T ONE THING IT’S ANOTHER.

In between his Festival activities, Jeff found his way to Hendersonville and the home of legendary songwriter Hank Cochran. “He was so gracious,” Griffith says of Cochran. “He’s already pitched me some hits for my next album.”

Introducing Whitney Duncan - iTunes Single of the Week

INTRODUCING WHITNEY DUNCAN

iTunes Single Of The Week

NASHVILLE – June 10, 2008 - Hailing from the tiny town of Scotts Hill, Tenn. (pop. 911), up-and-comer singer/songwriter Whitney Duncan is an intriguing, authentic new voice in contemporary country music, with a vocal prowess and gift for songwriting you usually only find in veteran artists. Obsessed with music as a child, Duncan has been singing and writing songs all her life, and the years she spent honing her craft are readily apparent on her debut album for Warner Bros. records, entitled Right Road Now. Duncan wrote or co-wrote every song on the album in conjunction with her co-producers, the industry hitmakers Mark Bright (Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts) and John Shanks (Sheryl Crow, Keith Urban). The album finds Duncan celebrating life and love, and chronicling love’s failure, in songs that span many moods, all of which perfectly encapsulate Duncan’s pure joy in the miracle of music.

The album’s first single is the sassy, up-tempo “When I Said I Would,” which Duncan wrote about a girl who is regretful about jumping into a relationship too quickly and finding out the guy isn’t quite who she thought he was. The track will be posted on iTunes as its “Single of the Week” from June 10th through June 16th, 2008. It will become available through all other digital retailers beginning June 17th. Ringtone and ringback for “When I Said I Would” are available now.

Bone Burnett; Kanye West; Levon Helm and the Ramble on the Road; B.B. King; Solomon Burke, and dozens of other artists over the course of four days.

Allen has just released "Bonnaroo" his musical tribute to the huge annual gathering. The song has attracted the attention of the AP National Newswire and it is slated to be included in a story about the festival, scheduled for publication this week.

Allen's "Bonnaroo" perfectly captures the essence of the festival by at first focusing on the local Chief of Police and his task of managing the huge influx of humanity into the small town community:

Well, ol' Chief Ross runs a pretty tight town
For fifty-one weeks he lays the law down
But there's that one week in the middle of June
He tries to keep to the peace but there ain't no use...

Traffic backs up on I-24
People from the South and folks from way up north
Headed down to Manchester, Tennessee
For a wild four day party...

Propelled by a swampy backbeat and Allen's powerful Southern drawl, the song kicks into the chorus and delivers the real goods about an event where "common men and the VIP's and 9 to 5 escapees" let the good-times roll:

They call it Bonnaroo
Four days of Country, Rock and Blues
With a Coffee County attitude
Bonnaroo

Bring your blankets, tents and campers too
Pass the good times around while you find your groove
Kick back and let the music take ahold of you
Down at Bonnaroo...

"Bonnaroo" is available to fans in advance of Allen's festival show via an exclusive featured free download at Gold Buckle Network: http://www.goldbucklenetwork.com

RANDY TRAVIS TO DEBUT HIS LATEST ALBUM AROUND THE BEND ON QVC

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Randy Travis to Debut His Latest Album Around the Bend on QVC®

Release Marks Travis’ Return to Country Music After Nearly a Decade

WEST CHESTER, PA (June 6, 2008) – From the top of the music charts to the silver screen, Randy Travis has been entertaining audiences with his brooding baritone and rugged swagger. Now, almost 25 years later, with nearly 30 top 10 song hits, 20 feature film roles and countless television appearances, Travis will, once again, be delighting fans when he makes his QVC debut to unveil his latest album Around the Bend.

Scheduled to appear on QVC Presents QSessions Live on Monday, June 9 at 11 PM (ET), Travis will give viewers a sneak-peek of his much-anticipated release with a special live performance featuring a selection of songs from the album. Fans will also get the chance to purchase Around the Bend, with a special five-track bonus disc featuring classic gospel and country favorites from Travis, created especially for QVC, more than a month before street date.

“It’s a pleasure to have an icon like Randy Travis on our QVC Presents QSessions Live series,” said Rich Yoegel, director of merchandising for QVC. “To offer our viewers this special live performance as well as the opportunity to purchase Around the Bend with the bonus disc a month before its release is exciting.”

Around the Bend is Travis’ triumphant return to country music after spending nearly a decade focused on his successful gospel and acting careers. Produced by the legendary Kyle Lehning (Reba McEntire, George Strait, Alan Jackson), the album is reminiscent of his early years when his ethereal voice and gritty guitar-playing made him an instant star in the country music world.

“My career has really come full circle with this release,” said Travis. “To be able to go to back to my roots and record a tried-and-true country music album was amazing. Having the opportunity to share my music with QVC’s millions of viewers makes the entire experience even better.”

Around the Bend will be available on June 9 through QVC at 800.345.1515 or www.QVC.com while supplies last.

StubHub Ranks Best Concert Ticket Deals of the Summer

StubHub Ranks Best Concert Ticket Deals of the Summer

Ticket Marketplace Reveals Top Values Just In Time for the Summer Concert Season

San Francisco, CA (June 4, 2008) With Memorial Day behind us, the summer has unofficially begun. Gas prices and temperatures are continuing to rise but ticket prices for some of the year’s best shows are remaining affordable. To help keep more change in fans pockets this summer StubHub, the world’s largest ticket marketplace, has released its recent sales data reporting the best concert deals across the nation, dispelling a misperception that ticket prices in the resale market are always out of reach.

The current economy is offering numerous reasons for consumers to shop for the best entertainment bargains; and StubHub has seen some attractive selling prices for this summer’s hottest tours. For example, tickets for popular tours like the Foo Fighters, Death Cab for Cutie and The Raconteurs are currently selling for an average of below $90. And while that may still seem pricey to some, consider last year, tickets to see Miley Cyrus a.k.a Hannah Montana sold readily for over $250 on average. But even greater individual bargains have revealed themselves with some StubHub users grabbing seats well below face value to Robert Plant & Alison Krauss for as little as $14 or Kenny Chesney and Coldplay for just $20.

Most of these summer shows have already sold-out at the box office and if not, fans are often frustrated with the process they have to go through to even get the “best available.” But with a service like StubHub, “sold out” no longer means that fans can’t go. The company has brought the aftermarket for tickets mainstream because of its enticing selection, reliability and guarantee on purchases. As the prices in StubHub’s lists will show, tickets to many popular tours resell on StubHub.com for under $100. And even for the superstar acts, where face value prices continue to escalate, resale prices for many remain surprisingly affordable.

“Many people think that the secondary ticket market only offers inflated prices but these numbers tell a different story that with a little bit of bargain hunting fans can indeed find great prices for some amazing performers – offering a great opportunity to get out and have some fun without hurting budgets,” said Sean Pate, Head of Corporate Communications for StubHub.

PLAYGIRL PUTS HAND ON COVER OF COUNTRY MUSIC ISSUE

,
PLAYGIRL PUTS HAND ON COVER OF COUNTRY MUSIC ISSUE

Nashville, TN – Playgirl magazine will release its annual country music issue next month, with singer Craig Hand on the cover.

“It came about last year,” Craig, 29, explained. “I was talking to my publicist, Kirt Webster, and he had mentioned it to me. He said, ‘Send me a couple of pictures and maybe we can get you in it.’ I didn’t make it last year. This year Kirt called back and said, ‘Still interested?’ ‘Yeah, love to!’”

Craig flew from his home in St. Augustine, Fla., to Nashville during Country Radio Seminar for the photo shoot. “A couple weeks later, I got a call from the photographer and he said I made the cover.”

He appears nude in the magazine, “but it’s done tastefully.” “My mom is OK with us since I am not baring the full nudity,” he said with a laugh. “I got her permission before I did it. I grew up in a Southern Baptist church, I couldn’t upset those people too bad. My wife has had aspirations to be in Playboy, so it was a joke a couple of years ago: ‘I’ll see if you make the cover of Playboy before I make in on the cover of Playgirl. Now it’s happening, and it’s kind of funny.”

Craig hopes the publicity will help his career. He was signed to Category 5 Records, but the label shut down. “I’ve been writing a lot, and I’m independently releasing a single over the summer,” he said. “With the help of Playgirl, hopefully we’ll find a label that wants to work with us.”

The July/August issue also features photos of Keith Urban, Darryl Worley, and Jason Meadows and interviews with Clay Walker, Tory Gentry, and Trent Willmon.

“Definitely in Playgirl, you get to see things that aren’t available anywhere else,” Playgirl contributor Christine Fontana said. “We have a lot of fun with the questions. We get to talk about love and relationships and we get to be a little edgier.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STEVE WARINER TO RECEIVE HOPE AWARD FROM MOUNT SINAI KRAVIS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL HALL FAMILY CENTER

Award To Be Presented During Fourth Annual Champions of Diabetes Dinner & Celebration on June 3

NASHVILLE, TENN. (June 2, 2008)—Steve Wariner has long been known for his formidable talents as a Grammy®-winning singer, songwriter, producer and musician. Tomorrow he will be honored with the Hope Award from Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital Hall Family Center for Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes for his work on behalf of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). This is the first time that the Hope Award has been presented to someone from outside the medical field.

Wariner will accept the award and perform “There Will Come a Day (Holly’s Song)” during the Fourth Annual Champions of Diabetes Dinner & Celebration at the St. Regis Hotel in New York. He initially wrote the song, with lyrics speaking to the parents of any child with a disability or illness, to perform at a JDRF gala. He included it on his 2003 Steal Another Day album and gave it to the JDRF to use for promotional and fund-raising purposes.

Diabetes has had a personal effect on Wariner, whose stepdaughter, Holly, was diagnosed with the disease as a child. Wariner was the Honorary Celebrity Chair for the 2000 and 2001 Walks to Cure Diabetes in Nashville. In 2001 and 2003 he joined the JDRF Children's Congress in Washington, DC, to raise awareness of the need for juvenile diabetes research and to lobby for stem cell research. He and Holly have also recorded public service announcements for JDRF and have done several interviews to raise awareness of the need for diabetes research.

In 2002 the JDRF Middle Tennessee Chapter honored Wariner at its Reds, Whites and Tunes Gala in Nashville for his work on behalf of the organization. He performed at the event and donated several items to the silent auction, all of which helped raise

$ 650,000 for the Johnny Russell Memorial Grant for juvenile diabetes research at Nashville's Vanderbilt University Medical Center. In 2006 Wariner received the JDRF Angel Award from the Los Angeles Chapter, and he received the JDRF Mike Coleman Award from the Knoxville Chapter in 2004.

“I’m deeply honored to receive the Hope Award,” said Wariner. “Mount Sinai does incredible work and research, and we’re all committed to finding a cure for diabetes. I feel blessed to be able to use my talents in any way to join that effort.”

Steve Wariner was inducted into the Music City Walk of Fame in April. The Walk of Fame recognizes those from all genres of music who have made significant contributions to preserving the musical heritage of Nashville and have contributed to the world through song or other industry collaboration.

Wariner began his career at the age of 17 when he joined Dottie West’s band as her bass player. He has recorded over 30 top-10 songs, including 14 #1’s—songs like “The Weekend,” “Small Town Girl,” “Some Fools Never Learn,” “Tips of My Fingers” and “Where Did I Go Wrong.” He has also written many hit songs recorded by others, including Garth Brooks’ “Longneck Bottle, ” Keith Urban’s “Where the Blacktop Ends” and Clint Black’s “Nothin’ But The Taillights.” His songwriting skills have earned him 16 BMI Country Awards and 10 BMI Million-Air Awards (for songs receiving over one million on-air plays).

In addition to his songwriting awards, Wariner has won two Grammy® Awards—in 1992 for Best Country Vocal Collaboration and in 2000 for Best Country Instrumental. He won the Country Music Association’s Single and Song of the Year awards in 1998 for his #1 hit, “Holes in the Floor of Heaven,” which was also the Academy of Country Music's Song of the Year in 1999.

Wariner has three gold albums to his credit—I Am Ready (Arista), Burnin’ the Roadhouse Down and Two Teardrops (Capitol). He joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1996. In 2002 he started his own label, SelecTone Records, for which he has released three albums—Steal Another Day, Guitar Christmas and This Real Life.

Washington Post piece on James McMurtry -- feat. interviews with Stephen King, Larry McMurtry, Robert Earl Keen, and more

His Songs? Bleak. His Future? Bright.

By J. Freedom du Lac
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, June 1, 2008

MADISON, Ind. -- Figuring that his well-traveled touring van was past due for an oil change, James McMurtry thought about looking for a Jiffy Lube when he pulled into town for the night's gig. But then he got a better idea. "First order of business, I'm gonna see if they have beer in the Mexican restaurant behind the hotel," he said.

So here is the Texas-born singer-songwriter-guitarist, slumped in a booth at Los Compadres, plucking the jalapeƱos from a plate of nachos in between sips of cheap Mexican beer while a couple nearby bickers about what to watch on television later. The restaurant is tucked behind the Best Western, hard by State Road 62 in an Ohio River Valley town that hasn't quite been the same since the steamboat boom went bust. There's a pickup with an enormous Dale Earnhardt window sticker parked outside. At the next table, a family is making plans to reconvene at the Wal-Mart down the road. Ranchera music blares over the speakers.

McMurtry, a famously caustic observer of Americana, murmurs: "It's pretty bleak."

This is precisely the sort of scene that might show up in a James McMurtry song. When he's not ranting about the screwy state of the union -- something he's been doing with increasing frequency -- McMurtry specializes in trenchant character sketches set in the vast nothingness of rural America.

It's an improbably colorful place as he packs his story-songs with novelistic detail and observations about fascinatingly ordinary people and fantastic fringe characters. It may or may not be a genetic gift: He's the son of the famous writer Larry McMurtry.

His lyrics focus on broken dreams and hard realities. "I tend to look at the dark cloud behind the silver lining," he says. (The songwriter Robert Earl Keen says that when McMurtry sits down to write, it's as if "another tragedy is about to unfold.")

Whatever he is -- bard in a bar band; songwriter's songwriter; hell, writer's writer (Stephen King will talk your ear off about him) -- McMurtry, at 46, has crafted one of the year's best albums in "Just Us Kids," which artfully mixes provocative portraits with political screeds, including the Bush-bashing "Cheney's Toy."

This after 2005's "Childish Things" was named album of the year at the Americana Music Association Honors and Awards. McMurtry's protest anthem, "We Can't Make It Here," was also named song of the year. (McMurtry performs Friday at the Birchmere.)

Critical acclaim is nothing new for the roots-rock artist, whose first album, 1989's "Too Long in the Wasteland," was hailed by Rolling Stone as one of the year's best debuts. The album prompted rock critic Robert Christgau to write in the Village Voice that McMurtry is "gonna be a prestige item, just you wait."

After nearly 20 years -- a period during which McMurtry was dropped by Columbia Records on account of low sales, then wandered from independent label to independent label -- the wait appears to be over. Eight albums into his career as a critical darling, his fan base is suddenly swelling.

"We're selling more seats and selling more records now," McMurtry says through clenched teeth, which is how he says pretty much everything (and how he sings, too). Almost indifferently, he adds: "It's energizing."

And then: "It's also an uncomfortable position. We're filling clubs that we used to not fill. But we're still in clubs."

"Because there's more people," McMurtry says, averting his eyes. "I'm not really a people person."

You're a misanthrope?

"I don't know that I'm a misanthrope; I just hate people -- some of the time."

* * *

Funny thing about James McMurtry: He has a masterly command of the English language, but you might not know it from engaging him in conversation -- if you can get him to engage at all. (He is notoriously taciturn around his fans.)

In interviews, he'll talk about himself, about his art, his influences, his politics, his father, his own son's songwriting -- all of it. He'll be thoughtful and revealing. He just won't be loquacious. Don't take it personally. His friends don't.

Every Wednesday, when McMurtry is at home in Austin, he performs a late-night set at the Continental Club. He's almost always preceded onstage by singer-songwriter Jon Dee Graham, who once asked McMurtry's girlfriend, "Why doesn't James like me? He's said maybe nine words to me in three years and we play together every week!"

"And she goes: 'Nine? Wow, he really likes you.' "

Graham laughs. "Obviously, this is a man who uses words like a scalpel. He's pretty [expletive] precise; I think he's always looking for the right words. . . . And as a songwriter, I respect and envy the hell out of him.

"He's able to create, whole cloth, out of thin air, things that never happened to people who don't exist, and to make them funny, witty, insightful and a general comment on the world. How do you do that?"

Might help that McMurtry's father is a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist ("Lonesome Dove") and Oscar-winning screenwriter ("Brokeback Mountain"). His mother, Josephine, recently retired as an English literature professor at the University of Richmond. But, James says: "I don't know if it has to do with being around them, or what I listened to when I was growing up."

McMurtry was born in Fort Worth, but his parents split when he was still a toddler. They moved to Virginia -- Josephine to Richmond, Larry to Waterford, in Loudoun County. James lived with his father, who taught at George Mason University and American University before buying an antiquarian bookstore in Georgetown; he spent weekends with his mother.

McMurtry attended his first concert at the age of 7: Johnny Cash at the Richmond Coliseum. He decided he wanted to do what Cash did. His father bought him a guitar; his mother taught him three chords. McMurtry says he really started to think about writing songs when he was given a copy of Kris Kristofferson's debut album, "Me & Bobby McGee." After boarding school in southern Virginia, McMurtry enrolled at the University of Arizona in 1980. He sort of studied English. "I think I became a sophomore after four years. I was more interested in playing the guitar than learning. I kind of regret that now."

He bailed on college and landed back in Texas, working as a house painter and bartender. A few years later, Larry McMurtry was working on a film project with John Mellencamp and passed along a cassette containing some of his son's songs. Impressed, Mellencamp helped McMurtry land a deal with Columbia and produced his 1989 debut.

"I didn't even know it was possible," McMurtry says of a career in music.

Then came the early acclaim, a series of business-side disappointments and, now, the recognition that seems to have been sparked by the scathing "We Can't Make It Here," posted online shortly before the 2004 presidential election. In his influential Entertainment Weekly column, Stephen King called McMurtry's first foray into political songwriting the best American protest song since Bob Dylan's epochal "Masters of War."

King, who owns a rock radio station in Maine, put "We Can't Make It Here" in heavy rotation, right alongside 2002's "Choctaw Bingo," a freewheeling, nine-minute vignette that McMurtry describes as "a song about the North Texas-Southern Oklahoma crystal methamphetamine industry."

"He excites me in a way that very few artists do, both on an emotional level, because I love music, and on an intellectual level, because I love poetry and story," King says from his office in Maine. "The clarity, the details, the feeling that these are real people -- or could be real people -- it's terrific."

King's support, McMurtry says, "couldn't have come at a better time for us; we were kind of slipping off the edge." Now, he's become a star -- albeit in the relatively limited world of Americana music. He's one of the three most requested artists on XM Radio's X Country channel. "James is really fine-tuning his craft, and I think his lyric writing is becoming even more evocative," says X Country program director Jessie Scott. "It was great early on, but it was more like shorthand. It's much more fleshed out now, especially his characters."

Larry McMurtry has watched and listened with pride. He has immersed himself in his son's music and has come to a surprising conclusion: "James's best songs are so good that I don't think that my best novels really come up to them."

How's that again?

"One element of music is poetry, and poetry is a lot harder than fiction," the father says from Arizona. "A lyric is the hardest form. You have to concentrate and squeeze those words. I respect James a lot for having found his own art and done it so well."

McMurtry is in Madison to headline the Ohio River Valley Folk Festival. He's grousing that he and his rhythm section, known as the Heartless Bastards, will have to perform without a sound check. He's unsure how to winnow the set list. His body language is crooked.

But later, when he begins to perform, it's as if the clouds have been lifted. Partially, anyway.

"I'm a Labrador retriever when it comes to performing: I've got my tongue out, I'm smiling, I want to be petted," says Robert Earl Keen, who has covered some of McMurtry's songs and considers him a friend. "James could give a [expletive]. He's all about standing onstage, doing those songs.

"He's like the Daniel Plainview of musicians. 'I hate most people!' [Laughs.] But people who like James, they love James. They don't care how he is onstage."

McMurtry's set here begins with "Bayou Tortous," the swamp-rock song that opens "Just Us Kids." "Just another night for the missus and me/Sitting on the couch watching Court TV," he speak-sings in that sardonic, bone-dry, low-boil voice of his.

Performing the album's title track, McMurtry, a terrifically understated guitarist, sings cuttingly of graying rebels and midlife crises. In the new "Hurricane Party," the theme is isolation. "Ruby and Carlos" is a sharp, sardonic story about a slowly eroding relationship.

McMurtry swears he's not a dire pessimist: "I try to hold out hope; you can't live without it," he says offstage. But "I don't know that I would call any of my stuff optimistic. I haven't gotten to that yet in a song."

The highlight of the performance is the back-to-back of "Choctaw Bingo" and "We Can't Make It," whose lyric about "stocking shirts in the Wal-Mart store/Just like the ones we made before/Except this one came from Singapore" earns a particularly loud roar of approval.

While McMurtry hasn't actually transformed himself into a full-time protest singer, he has earned more new fans than he's lost by flying his left-leaning flag.

"Our job is to be remembered, not loved," he says. "Your job is to make an impact. And if they hate you, they'll remember you, too."

He takes a swig of beer, then says: "You can like the art without liking the artist. You can."

Jeff Griffith Cinches CMA Close Up Debut Spotlight

Texas Traditionalist’s Down-Home Style Shines In June/July Issue

Nashville, TN (June 2, 2008) – Jeff Griffith cinches a spot in the June/July issue of the CMA’s Close Up magazine’s Debut Spotlight feature, and his down-home style shines. In the piece, Jeff confesses to being raised on a dairy farm, and making his musical debut at 14 in a Houston Bar (yes, he was chaperoned). Also covered are the challenges of marrying young (age 17), raising a family, and taking over his father’s concrete business following his dad’s stroke.

Griffith’s shares the story behind his debut album, IF IT AIN’T ONE THING IT’S ANOTHER, which was produced by Joe Stampley. Jeff admits that his audition for Stampley (arranged by a mutual friend) took him to Tennessee - his first trip there – and only his second trip out of his home state. That trip was the harbinger of the good things to come, and Jeff has earned four Top 40 singles (Drinkin’ Thing, If It Ain’t One Thing It’s Another, I’m Your Radio, Holed Up In Some Honky Tonk) since his CD’s release. He’s also been touring steadily, and upcoming summer shows include bills with David Ball, Jeff Bates and Stampley.

Jeff makes his CMA Music Festival debut this year, riding in the opening day parade, signing in at least five exhibit halls booths (Outdoor Channel, Sprint/Nextel, Digital Rodeo, Mr. Coffee, Power Source Magazine), and performing with special guest, Joe Stampley, on Friday, June 6 at 3:05 p.m. on the Greased Lightning Daytime Stage. He’ll also participate in a WSM Radio remote from Ernest Tubb Record Shop. “I must be doing something right,” says the humble singer. “It don’t get any better than this!”
